Solution Focused Brief Therapy

Solution Focused questions live in the forest of hope - not in the desert of doubt.

Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a future-focused therapeutic approach that focuses on the solution rather than on the problem. Developed in the 1980s by husband and wife Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg, SFBT is a time-friendly approach with long lasting effects. The solution-focused approach, instead of processing past failures or recalling problems and painful experiences, focuses on the client's desired outcome - what we call their "best hopes". This approach facilitates change, self-development and growth, while it honours the client's agency and autonomy.

SFBT is a highly practical and easily adaptable therapeutic approach which extends to a wide range of problems - stress and anxiety, relationship difficulties, behavioural problems, eating disorders, alcohol abuse to name a few. It helps a vast array of people, including young adults, families and couples.

As SFB therapist, I believe that my client's goals and desired outcomes are important compasses that help them to get where they want to go. In our solution-focused discussions, I do not encourage my clients to dwell on their limitations and weaknesses. I do not ask them questions that make them feel uncomfortable. Instead, I help them envisage a clear and very detailed picture of their preferred future. Together, we focus on their unique strengths and past successes, while I encourage my clients to realise and embrace their full potential holistically, and finally find the courage to move forward the change they desire.

The magic in SFBT is not in the techniques - it is in the way I view my clients. I go into the session believing that my client is capable and remarkable, and they are not just a sum of their problems.

Each individual wants to find happiness - Aristotle used to say that people consider happiness "the goal of existence". My goal as a wellbeing therapist is to help my clients create their own definition of happiness, based upon their emotions and experiences, and together find ways to get closer to their goal. In the process, the individual realises that they have an amazing way of getting in touch with everything that's right for them.
