Have you ever heard the term Emotional Bank Account? The term is of course metaphorical and describes the amount of trust invested in a relationship. I am talking about that feeling of security and stability you feel around someone else. If I make deposits of kindness, honesty, and stability towards you, then I gradually build a kind of capital. Your trust in me grows. I can even make mistakes, with your confidence towards me remaining intact because of the many and frequent deposits of love I have previously made.
But if I have the bad habit of being rude, abrupt, constantly interrupting you, ignoring you, betraying your trust, or threatening you, I gradually empty my Emotional Bank Account. Confidence levels drop very low, and I soon find out that my account is... in minus.
Remember: small deposits of kindness and love go a long way. Small deposits of rudeness and lack of respect make the biggest and most dangerous withdrawals from your Account. In relationships, it is the little things that are the big things.
